What is next for Mae Moh Mine?
Mae Moh Mine, located in Lampang, is one of the largest Lignite mines in Thailand and contributes to 97% of the country’s lignite resources. The mine has been operating for over 68 years, transforming the once agricultural communities into an industrial region, where the mine and the power plant became significantly associated with the local communities and the regional economic development and energy stability.
After opening in 1969, the mine has extracted over 500 million tonnes of lignite, while the remaining reserve of 800 million tonnes will last for the next 30 years. In the present day, the extraction is still operating and will be decommissioned at the end of its lifespan.
Since 2020, the study has been conducted to develop Concept lines, an integrated research and planning process, which aims to unlock all design possibilities and propose development alternatives toward a sustainable future for Post-mining Mae Moh; which incorporate diverse strategies, offer multidimensional values, and highly involve the active participation of local communities.
